Transforming Aalborg’s former akvavit distillery into a contemporary art institution means bringing two very different worlds together. The identity needed to acknowledge the character and history of the listed industrial complex while giving shape to the institution it is becoming. And with the building still under construction, it also had to work in the present, as Kunsthal Spritten operates through a nomadic programme across the city. We developed the visual identity and digital platform around this transition between industrial heritage and contemporary art. Rather than turning the history of the place into a nostalgic aesthetic, we used it as material for something new. The iconic Aalborg Akvavit lettering on the factory roof became a starting point for a custom display typeface, while the building’s structure and atmosphere informed the wider visual system. The identity is designed to be distinctive when Kunsthal Spritten needs a strong voice, yet able to step back and give space to the art. The website extends the same principles into a flexible digital foundation. Rather than a temporary solution while the building is under construction, it is designed to evolve with Kunsthal Spritten — supporting the institution today while preparing for the programme, exhibitions and experiences of the kunsthal to come.
